How long do hand warmers last? Tested at 5 temperatures
By Scott Boniface 06/05/2026PREF*RE SOLO pouches are rated for 8+ hours. ULTRA pouches for 12+ hours. The "+" matters. Real-world duration varies with ambient temperature, airflow, wear conditions.
The data
| Ambient | To peak | Avg first 4hr | Useful time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room (22°C) | ~3 min | 62°C | 9 hr 15 min |
| Cool (15°C) | ~3 min | 62°C | 9 hr |
| Cold (5°C) | ~3 min | 61°C | 8 hr 45 min |
| Freezing (-5°C) | ~4 min | 59°C | 8 hr 30 min |
| Deep cold (-20°C) | ~4 min | 56°C | 8 hr 15 min |
What the data tells you
Duration is remarkably consistent across temperature. Cold air slows the oxidation reaction less than people assume. PREF*RE pouches deliver 8+ hours of usable heat from -20°C to room temp.
Surface temperature drops slightly in deep cold. 56°C vs 62°C is noticeable but still comfortable.
Activation time is unaffected. 3-4 minutes to peak in all conditions.
Why airflow matters
Iron oxidation needs oxygen. The pouch breathes through its spun-lace outer. Cram a pouch into a tight pocket with no airflow, the reaction slows. Wear it loose in a glove with a vent, it runs faster. Don't seal a pouch in a ziplock during use.
The bottom line
SOLO delivers 8+ hours in every realistic outdoor or indoor cold condition. ULTRA delivers 12+ hours under the same conditions, just bigger and longer. The "+" is real.
